Gigs we’re Hungry for this February
First up, we have the Liverpudlian darling, Luvcat, who’s just headed out on her UK tour (and, for the record, just got back from her support slot with none other than the Libertines). In true Luvcat style, the shows promise to be a delicious blend of “Parisian decadence and British sweat n’ sawdust” — exactly the vibes the Amazon Music ‘artist to watch’ is giving on her new single “Dinner @ Brasserie Zédel”. For the Londoners, Luvcat is playing not one, not two, but three shows at the Hoxton Hall this Valentine’s weekend. Apt considering she’s just about to drop her sexy V-Day single, “Love & Money”, this Friday. The tour might be sold out on her site, but you never know — you might cop a sneaky re-sale if you’re lucky.
Next, we have the indie rock duo, Wings of Desire, who dropped their dreamy EP, Shut Up & Listen, last year on streaming, as well as a literal tape (love). In the present, though, the “Choose A Life” singers are playing London’s The Lower Third on the 18th as part of their UK tour. There are literally a few tickets left, so you should probably get one sooner rather than later. And if (like me), you’re from the absolute metropolis that is Sheffield, you might be able to nab a last-minute tick there, too. Check it out here.
From across the pond, Californian double-act The Hellp are taking on a mini residency, if you will, at London’s Corsica Studios from the 21st to 23rd of the month. Dubbed by [insert rival magazine here] “the last cool band on earth”, their vibe is hedonistic, sweaty and, honestly, just really fun. The duo might dress a little like it (love, again), but what The Hellp is not, is part of the New York indie sleaze revival, however much as everyone wants them to be. Rather, they’re an eclectic mix that sits between Bruce Springsteen and A$AP Rock. Anyway, we don’t like to wish ill upon anyone, but hopefully a few ticket-holders will get a nasty cold and won’t be able to go — so you can instead. Join the waitlist here.
Next, Dutch indie rock band Personal Trainer are heading out on a UK and Ireland tour, which concludes at Wanderlust festival at the start of March. Not only are we excited because festival season is within reach (thank God), but also because the band have just been nominated for an Edison Pop Award (kind of like a Dutch Grammy award, we suppose), for their recent album, Still Willing. You should probably go and hear it at one of their shows — get a ticket here.
Another one to put on your radar this month is Baba Stiltz and Okay Kaya’s headline show at London’s Chats Palace Arts Centre. If you weren’t aware, the Swedish artist-slash-fashionista teamed up with the Norwegian-American musician a while ago, and they recently dropped their debut EP, Blurb. You might have been lucky enough to see them tease their new project at the Village Underground last November, but, if you weren’t, you’ve got a chance now, haven’t you? Claim your spot here.
When I was nineteen and in my clurb era, Sasha Keable’s “That’s the Shit” was without exception my getting-ready song. Obviously the British singer-songwriter has done a lot of other stuff since then (her latest tracks “WHY” and “NIGHT OFF” have absolutely popped off) — and, adding to that list, is Keable’s headline show at KOKO, Camden. The show will take place on the 27th and you can join the waitlist here.
Last but not least, we have Biig Piig, whose UK and Europe tour will be touching down at the Roundhouse in Camden on the 27th. For the record, only three days ago the Irish-born “Sunny” singer dropped her debut album, 11:11, and it’s bloody gorgeous. I’m not just being biased because I’m half Irish — her voice is like honey, okay? Anyway, you’re going to want to hear it live, so make sure to grab a ticket here before it’s too late.
