Music you need on your radar this February

“Sofia Coppola”, Susannah Joffe
Valentine’s weekend might be over but we need to spotlight the new single from Austin-based artist Susannah Joffe. She supported none other than Harry Styles in Texas last year and we predict she’s about to have a moment in the UK, too. Named “Sofia Coppola”, the single’s got the romantic feel of Lana Del Rey and the vintage edge of Amy Winehouse, as well as the cinematic edge of its namesake. Tapping into Joffe’s romantic desires, the tune is sultry, playful and honestly just super dreamy. And if you recognise the visuals, that’s because Joffe’s reels sporting Coppola-inspired looks (which the singer designs herself, may we add) have recently gone viral. Give “Sofia Coppola” a listen here.
“Back In The Game”, Thom Yorke and Mark Pritchard
Next, we’ve got a brand-new track from Smile and Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and ’90s electronic legend Mark Pritchard. “Back In The Game” marks the first official release from the duo, despite their previous collaborations (Pritchard’s 2011 remix of Radiohead’s “Bloom” and Yorke’s appearance on Pritchard’s “Beautiful People”, to be precise). If you’re a Yorke fan, you might have heard a sneaky snippet of the track during his Everything tour last October. Now, though, “Back In The Game” is live on streaming for all to enjoy — listen here.
“Irish Goodbye”, Somebody’s Child
Also on our February playlist is a new track by Irish rock band Somebody’s Child. Dubbed “Irish Goodbye”, it’s the latest single from the group ahead of their upcoming second album When Youth Fades Away, slated for March. The song is sort of an ode to frontman Cian Godfrey’s younger self as he reflects on his youth. The title – which you’ll know, if you’re anything like us, refers to sneaking out of a party without saying goodbye – also echoes Godfrey’s own journey of leaving Ireland to chase his music career. Lots to think about. Check it out here.
“I Know You Know”, Girl Tones
Circling back to artists from across the pond, Kentucky-based sibling duo Girl Tones have just dropped a pretty little tune called “I Know You Know”. It’s a bit more subdued than their usual garage-rock (read: female rage) stuff, but, with its raw and delicate vibes, it’s definitely worth a listen. And, if you like what you hear, Girl Tones have got a headline show at The Old Blue Last this Wednesday (19 February). Give “I Know You Know” a listen here.
“CUT UP”, SAILORR
Last up, we have a new one from burgeoning R&B artist SAILORR. Following her re-release of “POOKIE’S REQUIEM” featuring Summer Walker, her new single, “CUT UP” is somewhere between a romantic ballad and a bass-filled party hit. Specifically, it follows a conversation between the Florida-based artist and a potential partner — it’s far from cheesy, though. Instead, the song is packed with lyrics that speak to SAILORR’s signature humour, which garnered her over forty million streams last year. While we wait for a more extended project from the artist later this year, give “CUT UP” a listen here.
