Music you need on your radar this month

From Julien Baker and TORRES’ fresh take on country to Mynameisntjmack’s rap tracks, these are the tunes you need to add to your playlist this month.

“Sugar in the Tank”, Julien Baker and TORRES

First up, we have Julien Baker and TORRES’ “Sugar in the Tank”, which is a delectable blend of country vibes and queerness. The original idea for the collaboration came from the artists’ experiences of growing up queer in the southern states of the US, and the song perfectly meshes the traditional country sound with personal storytelling. The music video is also hot off the press, having dropped today, and features the queer country dance party, Stud Country. As one of its members puts it, the dance group is “full of very hot and nice queer people” — and the “Sugar in the Tank” video can certainly attest to that. Check it out here.

“Pill”, Divorce

Next, you’ll want to be adding “Pill” by Nottingham-born band Divorce to your playlist. The song leans into the four-piece’s innovative take on guitar music and, lyrics-wise, deals with the trials and tribulations of a long-distance relationship. And, if you like the single, Divorce also has an album coming out in March, which’ll delve into everything from sexual awakenings to self-assurance.They’re also heading out on tour throughout the UK and Europe this year but, for now, you can listen to “Pill” here

“Low Vibrations”, Krept & Konan

Krept & Konan have been on our playlists for years now (we even featured the former in Issue 32), but the duo is making a comeback with their follow-up album, Young Kingz II this February. In the meantime though, their single “Low Vibrations”, which dropped last week, has grabbed our attention with the catchy party vibes we were loving in the club years ago. Give it a listen here.

“The Feels”, Yazmin Lacey

We’re jumping back to the end of last year for this one, but Yazmin Lacey’s most recent single “The Feels” is not to be slept on. Not only does she have the voice of an angel, but the blend of funk and disco is *chef’s kiss*. Her debut album Voice Notes is coming out later this year and we’re buzzing for it. In the meantime, though, have a listen to “The Feels” here.

“Fight or Flight”, Eades

Another one that harks back to last year but deserves a spot on your January playlist — Eades’ Fight Or Flight is an easy-breezy lo-fi EP featuring five tracks, the star of the show being the titular single. If you recognise Eades already, it could be because the band supported Wunderhorse on their 2023 tour. Now, though, Eades is heading off on a headline tour of their own, hitting the UK this month and the rest of Europe in February. Give “Fight Or Flight” a listen here.

“argue typing”, Mynameisntjmack

Last but not least, we’re the very first to hear about Virginia-based rapper Mynameisntjmack’s latest single “argue typing”, which drops on 22 January. As the name suggests, the song addresses that well-known feeling of typing out the perfect clapback in a text argument, only to realise words just don’t hit the same through a screen. While you wait for that, though, you can listen to his single “american spirit” – which earned him his place as one of rap’s freshest storytellers – here.
