Gigs we’re Hungry for right now
Ever since it opened its doors late last year, DRUMSHEDS has joined the likes of spaces like Printworks in becoming one of the best and biggest venues in London. And on the first weekend of October, it’s DRUMSHEDS that will be home to the 30th birthday of Rinse FM, the legendary radio station and record label. HUNGER staff have grabbed a ticket to see a rare live performance from The Streets, but for anyone who’s not a fan of time-tested garage bops like “Weak Become Heroes” (you’re mad), also on the lineup is DJ EZ, Giggs and D Double E. You can grab a ticket here while resting easy under the knowledge that the event only goes on from 1pm to 10:30pm — ample time to brave the worst of your comedown before you even hit the hay.
From Melanie Martinez to Deadmau5, right now it’s kind of en-vogue to be anonymous. Over here, the most famous masked musician comes in the form of UK rap and grime MC Casisdead. Though it was only earlier this year that Casisdead – who’s become known for his no-holds-barred approach to bars and ’80s synth-pop influences – won the Brit Award for Best British Hip Hop/Rap/Grime Act, it’s safe to say that he’s something of an enigma. He’s prone to a hefty hiatus and he’s definitely not the type to sit down for the kind of interviews that might probe why he dons his characteristic silicon mask. What we’re getting at is you should definitely grab yourself a ticket to his show at Limehouse’s Troxy venue, where he’ll be joined by special guests Florence Sinclair, System Olympia and the DJ Qendresa.
If you like your venues more olde worlde than industrial (DRUMSHEDS, we’re talking about you again), it’s got to be North London’s Alexandra Palace. On the 25th and 26th of this month, the iconic venue will be home to musician and DJ Jamie XX as part of his newly announced In Waves tour. Considering the breadth of Jamie XX’s musical flair – he’s collabed with the likes of Radiohead and his previous solo album topped numerous lists of the best music from 2015 – it’s of no surprise that his upcoming album will see him traverse everything from Northern Soul to acid house. Essentially, there’ll be a little something-something for everyone. Join the waiting list for a ticket here, or convince one of your mates who was going to attend in a more performative way to hand over the goods to their rightful owner.
Last but not least, we want to spotlight one of the underrated gems of London’s music scene: singer-songwriter Sam Akpro, who on the 3rd of October will perform at Elephant and Castle’s Corsica Studios. The label singer-songwriter isn’t actually quite enough for the South-Londoner. He got a Rising Star of 2024 nomination from The Face magazine and has already shared festival bills with Death Grips and Denzel Curry. His sound? There’s a whole mishmash of influences in there, but we’d describe it as a fusion of post-rock and jazz that’s perfect for a little late-night groove. This one’s a rare opportunity to see a performer who we’re sure is about to blow. Grab a ticket here.
