Travis Scott and Harmony Korine have produced a secret film for A24
It’s been two years since Travis Scott signed a production deal with A24, with Variety noting an upcoming project between the pair would “align with Scott’s upcoming album” Utopia. Ten months on from then, and the rapper posted Instagram stories featuring famed director Harmony Korine.
Clearly, something was cooking. Korine’s cult classic Spring Breakers was released via A24, and he’d already had a strong relationship with Scott, creating the artwork for Cactus Jack’s 2019 project Jackboys. While fans put two and two together at the time, today, we finally have confirmation that the two did, in fact, come together to create a feature-length flick.
According to a report by The Film Stage, Korine directed Scott in an “action-oriented” film “shot entirely in infrared,” which was recently test-screened at the Metrograph cinema in New York. Sounds exciting, right? Well, unfortunately, there’s one slight issue – Scott has left the film in serious limbo after refusing to sign off on its release.
Metrograph have, however, advertised for members this Sunday, there will be a showing of the “only ever screening of a very special filmmaker’s secret new project.” So, perhaps Korine’s film might eventually just circulate via unofficial means.
Scott’s album, Utopia, set to align with the project, is due for release later this month on June 28th. The long-awaited record will be revealed during a live-streamed performance at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, with tickets being made available before selling out.
Utopia will mark Scott’s first album since 2018’s Astroworld, which received a Grammy nomination for best rap album and has since gone 4x platinum in the US. The project will also be the artist’s first full-length release following the Astroworld 2021 music festival in Houston, which police called a “mass casualty incident” after eight people died and many others suffered injuries (two others died in the days following the festival.)
