Who. What. Where? No. 84

Welcome to HUNGER’s Who. What. Where? Your one stop shop for all the latest and greatest upcoming events and cultural fixes.

First up, it’s time to dive into the rebellious spirit of 1980s London at the Outlaws: Fashion Renegades exhibition, which centres around the legendary Taboo nightclub. Opened in 1985 by designer and performance artist Leigh Bowery, Taboo’s strict dress code (“Dress as though your life depends on it, or don’t bother”) sparked a cultural scene that fused hedonism with avant-garde fashion and culture. The exhibition – which calls the Fashion Textile Museum its home – showcases original garments and accessories from Bowery as well as over thirty designers. Rare pieces from designers like John Galliano sit alongside photography, film and artworks, all of which do their bit to paint a vivid picture of this magical era of UK nightlife. One for fashion enthusiasts and nouveau nightclubbers alike — grab a ticket here.

Ever since it opened its doors late last year, DRUMSHEDS has joined the likes of spaces like Printworks in becoming one of the best and biggest venues in London. And this weekend, on the 5th of October, it’s DRUMSHEDS that will be home to the 30th birthday of Rinse FM, the legendary radio station and record label. HUNGER staff have grabbed a ticket to see a rare live performance from The Streets, but for anyone who’s not a fan of time-tested garage bops like “Weak Become Heroes” (you’re mad), also on the lineup is DJ EZ, Giggs and D Double E. You can grab a ticket here while resting easy under the knowledge that the event only goes on from 1pm to 10:30pm — ample time to brave the worst of your comedown before you even hit the hay.

Any Belgium-dwellers here? Probably not. If you are, however, you’re in luck. This week one of our cultural fixes is taking place over in the land of chocolate: Antwerp’s FOMU is presenting the city’s first major solo exhibition of American artist Cindy Sherman. Opening its doors in late September (and showing until February of next year), the exhibition comes in two parts. The first, named Cindy Sherman – Anti-Fashion, explores Sherman’s fascination for fashion. The second, named Cindy Sherman – Early Works 1975-1980 is a look at the early genius of the iconic US artist — fans will be particularly excited to know that her “United Film Stills” series is available for a peruse. Grab a ticket here. Now there’s just the small matter of getting to Belgium.

Would you travel up North for a chance to do your own rendition of that girl in the Kaytranada Boiler Room set? The correct answer is yes. Where are we going with this? This weekend (the 5th of October, to be precise) you’ve got the opportunity to do just that — taking place at Manny’s Mayfield Depot is a Boiler Room set featuring the likes of Peggy Gou (who’s going b2b with Job Jobse) and Instagram-sensation sim0ne. Starting at 7pm and finishing at 4am, this one’s going to be a biggie. Grab a ticket here, then think about how best to shuffle your way up to the front. You definitely won’t regret having a feature-length video recording of you off your tits tomorrow. We swear.

One for you annoying esoteric people, now! On the 7th of October (next Monday) you can dive into the labyrinthine mind of Lynne Tillman, author of Weird Fucks and American Genius. Both of Tillman’s works have had a long road coming to print in the UK (though first published back in 2006, it’s only now that American Genius has made its way across the pond), and that’s likely because Tillman doesn’t exactly hold back. Think a 21st century version of Jane Austen – she’s explicit – or the originator of “sad girl” literature. Anyway — on Monday, Tillman will be at Foyles Charing Cross chatting with frieze editor-in-chief Andrew Durbin. Grab a ticket here
