Who. What. Where? No. 123

Just this morning I was wishing it was autumn already. And you know what channels that perfectly? A fireside chat. Channel One Sound System’s Mikey Dread is sitting down with music historian Lloyd Bradley to talk about UK sound system culture, taking Notting Hill Carnival’s energy global and lots more exciting stuff — like witnessing the roots of reggae grow in London firsthand. It takes place at Mason & Fifth’s listening lounge next Wednesday, and you can get a ticket here.

DJs? Vinyl-record-playing DJs? At dinner? It’s our restaurant of the month, Caia. Every evening the restaurant’s founder Tim Lang gets behind the decks (a multi-talented gentleman, it seems) to spin some rare and cult vinyls with a fellow disk jockey. As well as entertainment, there’s something else the Notting-Hill-based spot is particularly gifted at: wine. They have curated wine lists that pair with the restaurant’s open-fire dishes. Plus, there’s actually a sommelier series on there this month. The first week is based around the summer apéro, the second centres around Austrian wines and the third and final is all about “future classics” — very intriguing. Book here.

In other news, Boardmasters is on this weekend. It’s got a pretty sick line-up this year, with the likes of RAYE, Wet Leg and The Wombats trekking all the way down to Cornwall to put on a show for everyone. The festival also takes place by a surfing beach, so you can kill two birds with one stone if you’re into that. Get a ticket here.

Lastly, we’ll leave you with some music. Reading band Only The Poets have dropped ‘Guess She’s Cool’, a tune about liking (read: shagging) someone but still thinking about your ex. Can’t relate, but I’m sure lots of unfortunate souls can. It’s giving late-night spiralling, offset nicely with a colourful video filmed in a corner shop — which is also great for late-night consumption when you might feel a bit snacky. I wonder if they had to unplug the freezer to hook up the amps. Anyway, give it a listen here.
