Thanks to this auction, you could hit the town with Alabama Whitman from ‘True Romance’
Does Patricia Arquette, like her character in True Romance, actually like to get pie after a good movie? You’re the closest you’ve even gotten to finding out. Yesterday, the actor took to Instagram to share the news that she’s auctioning off a “night on the town” with her resuming one of her most iconic film roles: none other than Alabama Whitman of Tony Scott’s True Romance. According to Arquette herself, she’s going to pop on all those Alabama staples – “pink leopard tights” and “some turquoise high heels” – and adopt that classic southern drawl in aid of GiveLove, the climate change charity helmed by the actor that’s partnered with eBay for the auction. Also hoping to wrack up some donations for the charity is Beyonce’s microphone from the Renaissance Tour (bidding starts at $20,000), a day with actor Ben Stiller, and a Scream mask signed by David Arquette (who plays Officer Dewey in the horror franchise). That one will only set you back a mere $510.
The auction isn’t Arquette’s first foray into the world of social activism. When she won the Best Actress award at the 2015 Oscars, Arquette used her time on stage to highlight the importance of equal pay for women. In a 2016 interview with Entertainment Tonight, she said that her impassioned speech had cost her roles.
Arquette is known for a whole host of iconic film roles, too. As well as Alabama, there’s Alice in David Lynch’s Lost Highway, the decade-spanning (and Oscar-winning) role of Olivia in Boyhood, and Harmony in the trippy TV series Severance. It’s her character in True Romance, however, that has remained as something of a cultural touchstone. Basically a Tarantino-fied Romeo and Juliet, the characters in the cult classic flick have likely been revisited by your mates year after year come Halloween. It’s even a favourite of celebs, with Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker getting a whole production crew together to document their attempt at recreating the star-crossed lovers played by Arquette and Christian Slater.
The best thing about all this? Arquette said it herself: she might even go and get a slice of pie with you. It will set you back at least $10,000, but it’s for a good cause. Go on, just have a quick whip-round!
