Everything we know about the upcoming ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ reboot starring Donald Glover
The teaser for the upcoming Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV series reboot has been released via Prime Video, showing Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in an action-packed nine-second preview.
Glover – also known by the stage name Childish Gambino – has kept much of the contents under wraps, but has been named the executive producer alongside his younger brother Stephen Glover, as well as Hiro Murai, Francesca Sloane, Yariv Milchan, Arnon Milchan, Jenny Robins, Michael Schafer, Anthony Katagas, and Nate Matteson. The cast also includes Parker Posey, Wagner Moura, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, and Paul Dano – though their roles remain a mystery. Mr. Smith will be joined by Erskine as Mrs. Smith, known for her roles in the 2015 comedy Man Seeking Woman and the 2013 series Beta.
Erskine is well-versed in the comedy sphere, much like Glover in Community, with the pair handling guns, running from explosions, and dropping the odd line or two of “this marriage is starting off on a great foot.” The exact plot details have not been revealed yet, but what we do know is it will follow the pair’s relationship as they both agree to work as spies in an unknown agency.
Fans of the original 2005 movie with Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie will know that the initial comedy aspect was relatively limited and followed more of an action and romance genre. The two megastars in the original were married assassins that had to target each other, and it seems this new version is veering slightly away from that premise.
There were many rumours as to who would play Mrs. Smith with Glover, and Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge was the favourite for a while. Glover confirmed the cast in the February of 2021, but Waller-Bridge reportedly departed the project in September due to creative differences. In April 2022, Erksine stepped in.
Glover is keeping extremely busy at the moment, having just premiered his series Swarm in March on Prime Video, and creating and starring in the FX series Atlanta which wrapped up in November 2022. It was also confirmed at the end of June 2023 that he would be making his return as Troy in the Community movie, set to begin filming in the summer of 2024.
The Prime Video series of Mr. & Mrs. Smith will air this November 2023.
