Everything we know about ‘The Crow’ reboot, starring FKA Twigs
FKA Twigs fans rejoice, the singer will be debuting her acting chops in a remake of the 90s supernatural thriller, The Crow.
Earlier this year, Deadline revealed the singer had been cast in a reboot of the classic 90s movie. This isn’t the first time a reboot of the franchise has been attempted, there’s already been three sequel movies and two seasons of a 90s TV show. However, a modern reboot has been in development purgatory since 2008 and it finally looks as though it’s coming to fruition.
There have been reports that the film finished filming in Prague and is now going through visual effects production in Bavaria, Germany. “During a lengthy 10-week shoot, The Crow shot across numerous locations in the Old Town and New Town neighbourhoods of the Czech capital,” writes The Prague Reporter. “One of the major set pieces for The Crow was shot at Prague’s Rudolfinum concert hall, and involved the participation of hundreds of extras in formal attire.”
There has also been confusion as to whether the film has turned into a series after documentation filed with the city suggested that it was a six-episode TV show. Although, The Prague Reporter noted that this had not been confirmed with anyone involved in the production and the reboot has been consistently referred to as a feature film.
The original The Crow followed murdered musician Eric Draven, who was resurrected by a crow, looking to avenge those responsible for his death and the assault of his fiancé. The flick was based on a popular graphic novel of the same name from 1989 by James O’Barr. Shockingly, Brandon Lee, who played Draven, died on the set of the film after he suffered a fatal gunshot wound from a prop gun. Lee was posthumously praised for his performance having filmed most of his scenes prior to the accident.
Of course, the main thing that’s got us all excited for The Crow is getting the chance to see ‘Cellophane’ singer FKA Twigs make her big screen debut. Twigs has been cast as the protagonist Draven’s fiancé, named Shelly in the 1994 film. It’s not yet been revealed if Twigs’ character will follow the same narrative. Kristen Stewart was also reportedly considered for the role in early development.
Twigs will be joined by Bill Skarsgård, known for his role as Pennywise in the It franchise, who will be the film’s protagonist. Since the reboot first became a possibility, Mark Wahlberg, Tom Hiddlestone, Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum and Jason Momoa were all considered for the role. Danny Huston (Wonder Woman) is the only other confirmed cast member at this point and is playing a currently undisclosed role.
The reboot is directed by Rupert Sanders, best known for his previous efforts Snow White and the Huntsman and Ghost in the Shell — so it’s safe to say that the film will be just as dark and unsettling as the original.
The script for The Crow has been written by Zach Baylin, who was nominated for an Oscar for his writing on King Richard. It will be produced by Edward R. Pressman (who also produced the original) alongside Malcolm Gray. “The Crow is beautiful, dark, poetic and sometimes disturbing,” director Sanders said to Deadline. “It is a story of love, loss, grief and revenge. It is a great honour to revisit James O’Barr’s iconic comic and reimagine The Crow as a foreboding voice of today.”
At the time of writing, no official release date has been set for The Crow but it is expected to hit cinemas in 2023.
