Adam Sandler reunites with ‘Uncut Gems’ directors, the Safdie brothers, for new project
According to Entertainment Weekly Sandler said that he was “going to do another movie with the Safdie brothers. But unfortunately, he declined to offer any further details. Uncut Gems was a cultural phenomenon and a huge shift in direction for Adam Sandler who notoriously just missed out on an Oscar nomination for his incredible portrayal of the troubled jeweller, Howard Rattner. It also became A24’s highest grossing film, accumulating over $50 million at the box office.
“They’re working hard on it,” Sandler says of the brothers. “Their work ethic is bananas. They’re always working, always writing, always thinking. I don’t know what I can tell you, but it’s gonna be very exciting. It’s different. But I don’t want them to ever say, ‘What the hell did you tell him that for?’ So I’ll just let them talk about it.”
The Safdie brothers are highly respected for their filmmaking efforts and have become masters of anxiety-inducing, unbearably tense dramas. Before Uncut Gems, they directed Good Time, which starred Robert Pattinson and helped change the trajectory of his career. Good Time was met with critical acclaim and set the ball rolling for the siblings. Sandler, on the other hand, is more known for his comedic efforts in features like Happy Gilmore and Grown ups. He has grossed over $2 billion at the box office for his catalogue of over 30 movies.
While we hope Sandler and the Safdies will return to the grittier, cerebral tone, which they so beautifully executed in Uncut Gems. I mean, we’re open to anything if these three are involved. Both the Safdies and Sandler clearly hold great respect for each other and speaking to Entertainment Weekly in 2019, Sandler stated that he would “die to work with [the Safdies] again”.
Now, there’s been a huge debate regarding the Safdie brothers’ true muse for Uncut Gems and with this welcoming reunion, it seems like it was Adam Sandler all along (sorry Julia Fox).
