TASAKI’s new line gives pearls a new lease of life

The Japanese jeweller has collaborated with London-based designer Melanie Georgacopoulos for the collection.

TASAKI has never been shy about shaking up tradition. The Japanese jeweller, best known for its pearls and diamonds, has built a reputation for turning the familiar into something fresh, working with designers who aren’t afraid to break the rules.

This season, the spotlight falls on M/G TASAKI, the collaboration created with London-based designer Melanie Georgacopoulos, comprising two lines that give the pearl a whole new attitude.

First up: Square Leaf. This collection takes freshwater pearls and pairs them up with 18K yellow gold that folds and bends like, as the name suggests, delicate leaves. The pieces — pendants, earrings and rings — strike a balance between sharp edges and soft curves, so they feel at once sculptural and organic.

Then there’s Disc Pearl, which takes a lighter, more playful turn. Here, South Sea pearls appear to float between discs of TASAKI’s signature Sakuragold,  diamonds flickering around them like stars.

As for Georgacopoulos herself? Born in Athens to Greek and French parents, she started out in goldsmithing before moving into sculpture, eventually landing at London’s Royal College of Art. Since launching her label in 2010, she’s been on a mission to prove pearls don’t have to play by the rules — and her collaborations with TASAKI show just how bold they can be.

With Square Leaf and Disc Pearl, M/G TASAKI makes a clear point: pearls aren’t stuck in the past. They’re moving, changing and very much alive.
