From perfect pearls to purrfect pussy cats, here are HUNGER’s Met Gala ‘23 best dressed

The 2023 Met Gala honoured the incredible legacy of the late designer Karl Lagerfeld – and the A-list attendees did not disappoint.

Anne Hathaway in Versace would have blown the socks off Andy Sachs and her Chanel’s. The Devil Wears Prada icon took on Lagerfeld with the designs of Donatella Versace, who interpreted the theme with a strapless white tweed gown held with golden safety pins, pearl accents, and flower detailing. Fingerless gloves, a jacket thrown over the shoulder, and Bulgari jewels topped it all off.

Doja Cat always wants to shock, and shockingly, we don’t hate this look. She may have been out-felined by Jared Leto’s look, but the singer’s ode to Lagerfeld’s best friend and pet Choupette was rather tasteful. The glittering silver Oscar de la Renta gown featured cat ears, a dramatic ruffled train, and facial prosthetics reminiscent of the 2019 film Cats that gave viewers nightmares. It was equally wonderful as it was weird, but what can we expect from a singer whose stage name is Doja Cat?

Met Gala co-host Dua Lipa turned up in a corseted Chanel tweed number referencing Claudia Schiffer in the 1992 FW show for the fashion house. Originally worn with a matching jacket and hat, Dua Lipa opted for her long locks to be on show and the Haute Couture bridal gown to be the focal point – much to the delight of fashion history lovers everywhere.

Jenna Ortega was Wednesday meets Lagerfeld on this year’s Met carpet, keeping it monochrome with her goth-glam interpretation. Designed by Thom Browne, this iteration featured a black corset top with a ruffled skirt that was distressed at the edges as it fell into a long train. With a sheer blouse, bow-tie neck, and tweed bolero jacket, the golden chains were unmistakably on theme, and her platforms added a certain Ortega doll-like element to finish the look perfectly.

Margot Robbie returned to the Met Gala – for the first time since 2016 – to honour the late Lagerfeld. The Chanel ambassador recreated a one-shouldered black gown from the house’s SS 1993 Haute Couture collection. The dress featured a sweetheart neckline and sash that cascaded from the shoulder down to the mesh corset midsection. Complete with the house’s signature golden straps, Robbie and her long-time Chanel doubters were proven wrong this Met.

In this 2023 Met Gala, Pedro Pascal invented shorts. The Last of Us star and the internet’s ultimate man crush went for a Valentino fit complete with laced military boots, a cherry red overcoat with a matching shirt and tie, and *the* shorts. With a slick back ‘do and power stache, Pascal knew what his fans wanted.

Cara Delevingne did Lagerfeld proud with her 2023 Met interpretation. She immediately hit best-dressed lists everywhere as her ‘fit consisted of a draped white mini with an extremely low-cut neckline, and the back led into a long train falling off the white shirt-style piece. The edgy look was finished with the leather leg warmers (leg gloves?) and a grey shaggy cropped ‘do.

Elle Fanning in Vivienne Westwood was this year’s most angelic attendee by a mile. Romantic accessories included a flower crown with black ribbons and a bouquet of daisies to match a long white lace dress and cropped black jacket. Designed by Andreas Kronthaler, the references to Lagerfeld were laden throughout, with Fanning sharing on her Instagram that inspiration was taken from “the memory that stood out was when he photographed me for his ‘Little Black Jacket’ book. I was 13.”

Penélope Cruz was everything a Chanel bride should be and more. The light mint green gown was taken from Chanel Couture’s SS 1988 collection, as the co-host graced the carpet in a sheer hood, white pearl buttons, and full circle skirt. Originally worn by French supermodel Inés de La Fressange, Cruz finished with a signature ‘CC’ belt, slick back updo, and bronze sophisticated glam.

Brb just adding Maya Hawke in Prada to our wedding mood board. The Stranger Things star and her stylist Harry Lambert pulled as much bridal inspo as they could to create this minidress moment. It was adorned with blooming flowers, delicate bows, and a billowing cape. Hours of fine craftsmanship went into this one for sure, and it paid off.

Simone Rocha dressed Billie Eilish as her ensemble took a monochromatic gothic route. The singer wore an ebony lace bustier minidress adorned with embellishments, complete with a statement high neck, sheer overlay, thigh-high stockings, and matching embellished gloves. The power stances and sultry stares were the cherry on top.

Taika Waititi and Rita Ora were the public’s number one couple at this 2023 Met Gala. The singer arrived in a fitted sheer black number with lace train, black choker, and dramatic silhouette that stopped the paps in their tracks. Her husband, director Taika Waititi, opted for a blue dress coat, white pants, and string of pearls à la Lagerfeld. The best bit, however, had to be Ora’s nails that took on long dangly chains.

Anok Yai in Prabal Gurung has the internet in bits. The American supermodel wore a golden strapless mini that fell into silver fringed detailing on the skirt, ending with a sheer trail that followed her powerful strut down the carpet. Currently setting a reminder for when she drops her skincare routine.

Michaela Coel in Schiaparelli was easily this year’s most embellished attendee. The co-chair went for a figure-hugging gown that included 130,000 embroidered crystals and star-shaped jewels on the chest, as chains, pearls, and golden leaves wrapped around her body.

Jeremy Pope in Balmain stunned carpenters as he took an ode to Lagerfeld rather literally by plastering the designer’s face onto a 30-foot-long cape. But it didn’t come off as tacky, as the Olivier Rousteing-designed piece featured a hand-drawn illustration and took centre stage as the actor paired the likes with simple black flared trousers.

A$AP Rocky and Rihanna showed up fashionably late, of course. The rapper opted for a tailored blazer, white button-down, and black tie, weaving in his signature streetwear style with baggy jeans and a layered kilt. The singer took to the carpet in an uber-voluminous flowery white Valentino number, adorned with ivory fabric roses on the hood and complete with sunglasses that had their own eyelashes (handy!). Her ode to Lagerfeld didn’t stop there, as she left wearing a vintage 1997 Fendi look with a brown fur coat.

Emily Ratajkowski debuted ultimate hair inspo: the Hepburn-inspired choppy mini-bangs. Half-inspired by the beauty icon as well as vintage Chanel runway ‘dos, the models tousled waves and black velvet bow were undeniably Lagerfeld in their references. EmRata wore a beige Tory Burch number with a deep v-neckline and black geometric under-pattern. Feel free to send this as your reference picture to your hairdresser in advance.
