The biggest surprises and snubs at the 2022 Emmy’s

This year's awards show included historical first-time winners as well as some monumental snubs.

This year’s Emmys will go down as one of the tamer iterations of the awards show as it seemed almost everyone who was expected to win, did win. However, that doesn’t mean there weren’t a fair few surprises throughout the ceremony. In particular, it was the comedy category that riled up the most disappointment, with Ted Lasso pretty much sweeping the floor for the second year in a row.

Perhaps one of the biggest shocks was the fact that Only Murders in the Building, which received no less than 17 nominations, walked away empty-handed in the major categories. Both Martin Short and Steve Martin were seen as favourites for best comedy actor but were left scratching their heads after neither received the award.

One of the better moments at this year’s Emmys was Lee Jung-Jae picking up the best drama actor award for his stunning portrayal of Gi-Hun in Squid Game. The victory made Lee the first Asian actor to win in that category and only the fourth Asian actor to ever win an acting Emmy. “Thank you to the Television Academy, thank you to Netflix and thank you to the director for making realistic problems we all face come to life so creatively on the screen with a great script,” he said during his acceptance speech at the star-studded ceremony. Lee beat out stiff competition from the likes of Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk, Jason Bateman and Adam Scott to win the award.

Surprisingly, Lizzo also took home an Emmy for her Watch Out for the Big Grrrls show, which dethroned RuPaul’s Drag Race for best reality competition series. RuPaul had won the award on the last four occasions but it was Lizzo’s show, in which 13 women compete for jobs as backup dancers for the Grammy-winning music superstar, which took this year’s crown.

Somehow, Better Call Saul continued its woeful losing streak this year despite most people considering it a shoo-in in several categories. Despite Odenkirk’s snubs, it was perhaps Rhea Seehorn who left the most disappointed. After finally being nominated for her brilliant performance as Kim Wexler in the drama supporting actress category, fans thought the show might finally have a winner. Of course, that didn’t come to fruition and it was Ozark’s Julia Garner who came out on top instead, which we can’t really complain about.

Fans were shocked after the evening’s In Memoriam segment, which honours TV actors who have died in the last year, left out Olivia Newton-John. Although Newton-John was best known for her film roles, most notably Sandy in Grease, she also appeared in a number of TV series, including Kommotion and Snowy River: The McGregor Saga.
