Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj reimagine Aqua’s hit with iconic new single ‘Barbie World’

Queen of rap Nicki Minaj may have just found her new prodigy in Ice Spice, as the pair link up a second time for ‘Barbie World’. The new collab is set to appear on the soundtrack album of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
The new song samples Aqua’s cult classic ‘Barbie Girl’ – which fans were dying to have on the soundtrack, and it seems their wish has come true. Arriving with an iconic hot pink music video directed by Hannah Lux Davis to accompany the sizzling tune, the visuals see the pair transform into two real-life Barbie dolls chilling at the Barbie Dreamhouse as they fly around Barbie World. Minaj reaches new heights in the video, terrifying men in suits which is an apt throwback to the first Barbie trailer we saw.
The music video even ends on a note that we know would make Gerwig proud, as the director told fans that the “kid-ness was paramount” to her ideas. The pair translated this into their own work, showing young girls playing and colouring in their new Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj dolls to keep true to the fun that surrounds the Barbie franchise.
It’s safe to say that fans were mega excited about the drop, with one Twitter user saying “I’M SORRY BUT ICE SPICE AND NICKI MINAJ ATE SO BAAAAAD,” and another stating that “Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice might be one of the best hip-hop duos we’ve had in a while.” Others were impressed by how well newcomer Ice Spice hit the track, with her three top five hits of ‘Princess Diana,’ ‘Boys a Liar, Pt. 2’ (with PinkPantheress), and ‘Karma’ (with Taylor Swift) under her belt. The bar that got fans most excited was “I keep draggin’ her, so she bald a bit,” with Ice Spice teasing the video by tweeting out the line herself.
Others were that impressed with Ice Spice being able to hold her own next to the Queen of rap, they tweeted “WAIT WHY ICE SPICE KINDA ATE NICKI UP ON,”, with another adding “me explaining why Nicki and Ice Spice did it for me in the #BarbieWorld music video.” But Minaj is well known for championing women in rap, so this collab could be the start of her taking the star as her next rap prodigy – and we are more than excited.
The ‘Barbie World’ tune follows the release of Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance The Night’, Karol G and Aldo Ranks ‘Watiti’, and PinkPatheress’ ‘Angel’. The Barbie soundtrack will also include tunes from Lizzo, Tame Impala, Charli XCX, and more, and will drop alongside the premier of the film on the 21st of July.
