Here’s what you should know about Liz Truss

As England welcomes in a new Conservative Prime Minister, we've broken down a few things you should probably know about the next Tory leader.

Liz Truss, the Maggie Thatcher wannabe with some firm stances on cheese and some damaging positions on the LGBTQIA+ community, has been declared the new leader of the Conservative Party and the new U.K. Prime Minister.

It’s been a gruelling process ever since party animal Boris Johnson said he would step down from the post after months of turbulent Downing Street antics, and Truss quickly took the lead as the favourite to be the next U.K Prime Minister. Naturally, the internet took it upon itself to churn up all of the weird and worrying things that Truss has said in the past. But memes aside, surely Truss could never be as bad as her predecessor? Well, find out for yourself… These are the things you need to know about the next PM.

1. She has a dangerous stance on the transgender community

You could probably guess what a Tory leadership hustings would be like; a lot of tweed and transphobia. In the final round of inter-party leader panels, Liz Truss outright denied that a trans woman is a woman, saying that “a woman is a woman” and that there needs to be clear language around the subject. Earlier in the race, Truss said during the GB News leadership discussion that the debate has been dominated by left-wing politics, something that she’s keen to curb. Truss’ Tory rival Rishi Sunak has also stated that trans women are not women.

2. She’s fighting against “woke culture” in the U.K.

This is a bit of an odd policy, really, considering that a quick google of what the word woke actually means shows what Truss is fighting against: ”‘Woke’ – aware and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social injustice)”. But this has meant that she’s fed the non-woke media beasts like GB News, and even said that the outlet is more trustworthy than the BBC.

3. She’s really passionate about cheese

Surely anyone who cares more about cheddar than they do transgender people shouldn’t be taken seriously? It seems that most people seemed to have thought Truss may care a little too much about where we get our cheese from, but her strange declarations on stage about food seem to be a regular occurrence. It may be a “disgrace” in Truss’ eyes that we import two thirds of our cheese, but at least she has been setting up pork markets in Beijing…

4. She has consistently voted in favour of gay rights

If you hear what Truss has to say about the trans community, you’d probably think she wouldn’t be too keen on the rest of LGBTQIA+ folk and rights such as gay marriage. However, quite contradictorily, Truss has actually always voted in favour of gay rights, and only been absent from one vote on the matter. If you don’t believe us, check it out for yourself…

5. She was president of the Oxford University Liberal Democrats

Truss hasn’t always been a Tory. Well, only in the respect she’s cut from the same cloth and attended Oxbridge like most of the colleagues she rubs shoulders with. But back in her days at Merton College, Oxford, she actually headed the university’s Liberal Democrats organisation, and followed in the political footsteps of her left-wing maths professor father. Quite understandably, her dad has since said how disappointed and sad he was in her transformation from leftie student into full blown conservative.

6. She has supported the abolition of the monarchy

Back before she joined the Conservative Party, and before she upset her father with her political choices, she vehemently supported the abolition of the monarchy. At a Lib Dem party conference in 1994, a young Truss stated “we do not believe people are born to rule”, which was welcomed by a roar of applause. You can only imagine how awkward it might be when Truss makes the trip up to Balmoral to meet the Queen prior to taking on the reins as PM.

7. She may not be who she says she is…

Can you trust Truss? The new PM is famous for being a bit of a flip flop. She’s changed her mind so many times in fact, that Sky News presenter Kay Burley asked the real Liz Truss to stand up, after questioning her U-turns on Brexit, Brits fighting in Ukraine and much more…

8. She’s a Brexiteer (kind of)

When the prospect of Brexit came around, Truss was firmly in the camp of the remainers, campaigning against the idea of Britain leaving the E.U. However, like a lot of other things that she has changed her mind about, she now sides with the pro-Brexit crowd, which was most likely simply to appease all of the Tories who don’t want a “Remoaner” as a PM.

9. She’ll keep the U.K. out of direct conflict with Russia

Whilst it is hard to be sure what Truss will actually do as PM right now, and most of the conversation is centred around what policies she’ll put in place to help with the meteoric rise in energy bills and the damning effects it will have on households around the country, she has said that Britain will steer clear of boots on the ground in Ukraine. Again, can we trust anything she says? Right now, Britain is fighting alongside Ukraine against Russia via support in weaponry and the like. For more info on what Truss has said on her policies, check out Politico’s roundup…

10. Comedian Joe Lycett is her biggest fan

Despite the fact that Truss has slated the BBC for its left-wing stance, she’s found a fan in comedian Joe Lycett. Well, not really. In a humorous turn of events for the rather depressing leadership race, Lycett admitted that he is in fact very, very right wing and, because of his non-woke political orientation, is very much enamoured by Truss and her plans for the future. Some might say she’s “the backwash of the available MPs”, but Lycett wouldn’t say that…
