Balenciaga is bringing back blokecore for 2024

The label recently debuted a new football-inspired collection.

Some of you may have predicted that blokecore would fall to the wayside in 2024 – but it seems as though Balenciaga didn’t quite get the message.

Hot off the heels of its Los Angeles runway show, the label isn’t holding off on blokecore for 2024. Announcing a new, limited-edition collection of ready-to-wear and accessories, the label is drawing inspiration from the world of soccer, releasing a collection filled with long-sleeved jerseys, track pants and scarves emblazoned with familiar-looking logos, piping and sports-inspired details.

Arriving in a slew of vibrant colorways, the collection features hues of neon green, pink and red, interspersed with classic tones of navy blue and black. Matching tracksuits, shorts and poplin jackets make up the bulk of the collection, rounded out by brimmed caps, zip-up hoodies and socks.

A selection of the new football-inspired garms also features the name of a city where it can be bought, in place of the typical player’s last name, including Dubai, Tokyo and Paris. Some pieces also feature the number 10 instead of a player number, acting as a subtle nod to Balenciaga’s historic address in Paris.

This hasn’t been the first time that Balenciaga have shown their affinity for the sporting world either. Who could forget their adidas collab last year where the two brands produced co-branded football shirts that just looked like cheap Manchester United knockoff merch or Demna Gvasalia’s AW20 collection featuring neon green full-kits.

Meanwhile, last year, Balenciaga actually took their kits on the pitch. French Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennais F.C. stepped out onto the pitch to face Troyes in what would be a comfortable 4-0 victory, although this time, they weren’t rocking their usual home kit. For this game, the side donned a special Balenciaga-designed iteration, featuring a few notable tweaks to their jersey.

On the back of the shirt, Balenciaga’s spellout sat above the players’ names, and their numbers also received a makeover too. This time, they displayed a rainbow motif inspired by the Pride Flag’s colours in an effort to combat hate towards the LGBTQIA+ community on International Day Against Homophobia (May 17th 2023).

So, whether you’ve got blokecore on your ‘ins’ or ‘outs’ for 2024, it seems Balenciaga are banking on it staying on top throughout the year.
