10 Reasons to buy Hunger issue 15, Fantasy Meets Reality
Our cover stars
This issue Hunger presents four covers – actress and star of Spike Lee’s Blackkklansman Laura Harrier shot by photographer and Instagram sensation Renell Medrano in LA, rising actress and Instagram-alt girl Bria Vinaite shot out and about in her neighbourhood in Brooklyn, Hollywood stalwart Liv Tyler photographed by Rankin in a shoot inspired by old cinema and black and white movies, and a special art cover devised by Rankin and his long time collaborator Andrew Gallimore depicted the twisted theme.

Jean Paul Gaultier on fantasy
You can’t mention fantasy in fashion without one man’s name springing to mind – Jean Paul Gaultier. The enfant terrible of French fashion and original provocateur exclusively talks to us about his illustrious career and the opening of his debut theatre show, Fashion Freak Show.

OG supermodel Pat Cleveland gets nostalgic
Sticking with fantasy, we travel to New York for a shoot with legendary supermodel Pat Cleveland who reminisces about the heady days of Studio 54, the era of free love and 1970s New York – a time when the fantasy of glamour was juxtaposed by a city on the verge of bankruptcy.

Anja Niemi on subversion
Photographer Anja Niemi, a master of modern subversive photography, is an artist that we have admired for some time, and this issue marks her first time in Hunger magazine. We discuss her career to date and the themes that underpin her work – from feminism to the power and transience of identity.

Crowns and Owls interpret the work of Alex Gardner
Fashion plays a huge part in each issue of Hunger, but for our Fantasy Meets Reality issue we did things a little differently – collaborating with a host of both fine and digital artists on our editorials. In Escalator creative collective Crowns and Owls teamed up with artist Alex Gardner and our fashion director Kim Howells to create a story inspired by Gardner’s mesmerising work around black identity.

Final Fantasy: Our Collections story goes digital
For our AW18 collections story we followed suit and worked with four different digital artists – Slime Sunday, Charlotte Edey, Daniel Pashman and Pure Honey – who each created bespoke worlds for each look to inhabit, inspired by space, technology and romance.

Rankin and Andrew Gallimore create magic once more
It wouldn’t be an issue of Hunger without a next level beauty editorial from Rankin and longtime collaborator Andrew Gallimore. Working with the fantastical theme the pair were inspired by the changes in technology, resulting in a mesmerising story aptly titled Transform-Her.

We travel far and wide…
Each issue Hunger work with teams of photographers from around the world, allowing us and our readers to travel the globe through the pages of the magazine and explore new perspectives and cultures. This issue we take to South Africa for Wayfaring Stranger, a nomadic editorial focussing on local designers and creatives.

Get a rare insight into the work of filmmaker Amy Berg
Award-winning filmmaker Amy Berg has been fighting for social justice through her documentary filmmaking since 2006’s Deliver Us From Evil, a documentary charting abuse and paedophilia in the Catholic Church. Subsequent films have tackled child abuse in Hollywood, wrongful convictions and extremist religion, and next up Amy will be delving back into the case of Adnan Syed of Serial podcast fame for a HBO documentary. In a very rare interview we get a glimpse into what happens behind the camera.

Charting 50 years of protest photography
Photographer Builder Levy has been photographing protests in the United States for over 50 years – and in that time has captured Malcom X, Martin Luther King and numerous other seminal moments in history. Now 78, we speak to Builder about the parallels between history – the then and now of the USA – in a poignant and candid interview for our documentary section.
