Take a look at Danilo Giangreco’s Pinterest board and you’ll see trees, cracked vases and a mismatch of shapes. What you’ll be hard-pressed to find is images of hair. Having been in the industry for over two decades, there’s one term the Italian hair stylist lives by — “outside the box”. After all, for Puglia-born Danilo, his craft is a form of art.
“It’s not just hairdressing,” he tells me. “It’s sculpting, painting, decorating all at once.” It’s fitting, then, that Danilo speaks of hair as his “medium” — “If you see it as a medium, like a piece of stone or wood that you’re carving, or a piece of fabric you can sew, the possibilities are endless,” he says. “Hair is just another material to create something.”

Like most artists, Danilo, 44, relies on a hefty toolkit for his craftsmanship — but in the case of his project for HUNGER, you’re more likely to find some of its contents on the shelves of a DIY store than in his southwest London salon.
