Tyler, the Creator has joined the cast of Josh Safdie’s upcoming film
Marty Supreme, the upcoming film that’s loosely inspired by pro ping pong player Marty Reisman, is all about debuts. Not only will it mark the first solo venture of director Josh Safdie – who usually teams with his brother, Benny – but it will be the feature film debut of Tyler, the Creator. While that might seem a little random (and like it could be another failed attempt down the musician-to-actor pipeline), this one’s kind of written in the stars. It was back in 2018 that Tyler gave Timmy a little shoutout on his track “Dune”, where he rapped “Tell Tim Chalamet to come get at me / Skin glowin’, clear of acne”.
Not much is known of Marty Supreme. Though Tyler, Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow are set to have key roles – the latter being something of a big screen comeback for the Goop founder – it’s still up in the air who exactly they will be playing. And though we don’t reckon the brain behind flicks like Good Time and Uncut Gems is likely to offer up a straight biopic, Marty Supreme will take inspiration from the life of Marty Reisman, who had a whopping 60-year-long career as a ping pong mogul. What should you be sinking your teeth into now? The nearest thing we’ll get to Marty Supreme is probably the solo debut of the other Safdie brother, Benny, who just finished shooting The Smashing Machine, a sports drama based on mixed martial artist Mark Kerr. Maybe we’ll get a Timmy-slash-Tyler verse in the meantime? With the Call Me by Your Name actor in possession of bars like this, we sure hope so.
