Through the lens of Liz Hatton
Liz Hatton has a bucket list — there are ten things on it, ranging from watching the filming of Would I Lie to You? to helping film a movie. And the thread tying it all together? Bar catching a glimpse of UK comedy greats in action (Hatton loves the show’s host, Rob Brydon), it’s photography. Hatton is, in her own right, a photographer, and since getting diagnosed with a rare form of cancer earlier this year, she’s decided to squeeze in what most photographers do in a lifetime.
“At the start of all this […] it’s fair to say that none of my family were feeling very optimistic,” Hatton tells me over Zoom, her mother, Victoria, sitting beside her. “But seeing the amount of kindness in the world sort of helped us to realise that you can be dealt one bad card, but if you carry on and you see the next few cards, they can turn out to be the luckiest of your life.” Those cards have included shooting investitures at Windsor Castle, capturing London Fashion Week’s catwalks, and now, creating a fashion editorial for HUNGER’s 33rd issue with model Fifi Anicah. Hatton’s diagnosis — desmoplastic small round cell tumour, which affects only 12 people in England annually — might have opened some doors, but she’s adamant that she’s got to where she is because she’s a good photographer.
