Stranger Things: Eerie pink glowing sky turns out to be caused by monster weed farm

Don't worry, we’re not being invaded just yet…

A huge, mysterious pink glow isn’t exactly what you expect to find when gazing into the night sky. Residents of the Australian city, Mildura, saw exactly that on Wednesday night, sending citizens into a frenzy as they prepared for an imminent alien invasion.

Thankfully, no little green men descended upon earth and it turns out there was no reason to panic at all. Although, the explanation for the sinister glow is probably even stranger than extraterrestrial visitors.

The seemingly unexplainable phenomenon was merely due to special lamps used in a large-scale cannabis farm; the staff probably should’ve remembered to close the blinds. “Cannabis plants require different spectrums of light in order to encourage their growth,” Rhys Cohen, senior communications manager at Cann Group, who runs the facility, told The Guardian. “A red spectrum light is often used. Normally the facility would have blackout blinds that come down at night, and will in the future block that glow.”

Of course, the revelation didn’t stop users on Twitter cracking jokes and pointing out the similarities to Netflix’s Stranger Things. One user wrote “So they went and opened The Upside-Down?” referring to the terrifying alternate dimension in the show containing humanoid predators. Should call the strain Stranger Things cause one hit sends you into the upside down” hilariously added another.

Cann Group announced it was harvesting its first commercial medical crop at its Mildura facility in June after a cultivation permit was issued by the Office of Drug Control in March, Cannabiz reported.
