How Sasha Lane became fashion’s new darling

Sasha Lane is in very good spirits today. Like her on-screen personas, the breakout actress’ energy is utterly infectious: jumping around the East London studio (not downhearted by the miserable rain outside), playing tunes on the piano and charming everyone on set. “Girl, you need to go home, put on some Madonna, and dance around in your underwear!” was her sage advice to me after talking boy drama for all of five minutes. The 'American Honey' star is part zen yoga instructor (she talks often about keeping things ‘flowing’ and the ‘beautiful’ aspects of life), part crazy-wild BFF you’d stay up all night with. Her personal style – a kooky mash-up of sports luxe meets new bohemian has also grabbed the attention of designers – last year she was a muse for Louis Vuitton and is often spotted on the FROW at Fashion Weeks. Now, the 22-year-old Texas-born talent is starring in Ugg's fall/winter 2018 campaign. Sitting comfortably in a quiet corner, Lane talks personal style, hype music and how she keeps it real in the digital age.

On her teenage style…

“I literally wore basketball shorts and t-shirts. I played sports – I was a completely different kid! I was like gimme some slides or some nice tennis shoes…I’d wear a baggy t-shirt, shorts and a scrunchie. Now, it’s more about my moods and how I feel. With fashion everything literally comes back around and it’s funny to look back on those pictures and what we wore and stuff – you know we f**ked with it back then so might as well do that again. I’m not a huge futuristic person so I like going back to those classic pieces.”

On early UGG fashion memories…

“The first time I legit got UGGs I was about 14 or 15 and my step-mum had gotten some, and then she got some for my step-sister and then for the first time I was like ‘I wanna be cute with y’all!” and have my girly moment. They are so comfy. Now, to be in a campaign with them and see the direction they’re taking – especially with the graphics and simple black and white style – I love it.”

On her style icon…

“This chick Aurora, she’s Norwegian and she looks like she just come out from a blizzard and appeared. It’s all fabrics, bands and like she’s going to fly off soon.”

On rocking ‘anti-fashion’…

“I mean a lot of things I put together, I think a lot of people wouldn’t expect to put together: like I had these like tights from a shoot I wore with fuzzy heels, shorts and tank top. I was like “Hold, the f**k up! I’m gonna put this all together!” It kind of came out bomb you know? It was probably really horrible, but the fact that I was like, I look good! If you just own it then people are like, yeah! I’m sure half the s**t I wear, if you were to break it down you’d be like, “girl, no!” [laughs] but it works because in my mind I’m The S**t!”

On her pre-red carpet playlist…

“For an event I just want to feel free and float through the room so I would usually put on really flowy music – Spice by Ravyn Lenae is great. For a red carpet it’s Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Rihanna… I need to go out there and y’all can’t touch me, I feel strong. Y’know? You need that bad b***h to hype you up!”

On social media anxiety…

“I want to live my truth always so I usually don’t feel anxious about whatever I’m posting. People try to put me in a box constantly, it’s like they either want me to be a rebel or she’s the hippie. So when some people think I’m in this whole hippie vibe and everything’s all flowy and cute and I [do] something  that’s a bit risqué I’m like ‘should I feel bad?’ But that’s just outside pressure.”

On doing her own thing…

“I definitely feel like it’s important to be a free spirit. I don’t know if I’ve necessarily been allowed to do it but I’ve done it anyways, because I’m very stubborn. I’m never going to do something that doesn’t mean anything to me, so I keep people around me that are down for me and allow me to be as random as I am. Because when I have that and people going, “Sasha, do you!” I can’t pretend to do something I don’t like, it’s just not worth it.”

On the women that inspire her…

“I’ve always been around strong women. Even if they didn’t tell me I could do something I wanted I just saw them saying I’m going to push and push and push. Of course women are great! We push out human beings, build homes, and are comforting, strong and savvy! So I’m like this is great that y’all are so hype over this [women in the film industry] but this shouldn’t be a trend – we’re great! Look at us. We’re trying to make movies too b***h!”
