10 questions with Tallulah

Meet the singer, songwriter and label boss...

Hailing from Peckham, South London, Talullah’s breakout EP is a vibrant and promising debut. A three track collection entitled Purple, the songs exemplify the talent the rising star has got to give. ““I think of purple as a colour of uncertainty and wonder,” she explains, “I think uncertainty, can be an exciting thing, a nervous feeling a lonely feeling and a liberating feeling.” Written about different relationships from Tallulah’s own experience, ‘Strangers’, ‘Kept’ and ‘Don’t Leave’ all show the diverse sides to the artist. Accompanying the EP with a forthcoming short film co-directed by Tallulah, as well as a limited edition zine, the new artist will spotlight the creative process behind the making of Purple, comprised of notebook entires, lyrics, collages and behind the scenes photographs. We meet the one to watch, and find out the answers to 10 very important questions…

Describe your music in 3 words…

Timeless, delicate and emotional.

Who’s your greatest influence?

Cyndi Lauper: her music, her style and just her in general. She’s always been active in standing up for the LGBTQ+ community especially those effected by homelessness.

What does music mean to you?

I guess everything. I listen to music to get ready for my day, whilst travelling, when I’m sad and want to be alone and when I’m happy and wanna dance with friends. It’s pretty amazing really to have something there to support every occasion, feeling and emotion.

Who’s the last person you called?

My Mum.

What did you talk about?

What I’m making for dinner tonight, the fact I’ve just discovered trainers come out really well in the washing machine, the video shoot I have tomorrow, the mattress protecter I’ve just put on my bed, the ramen soup I made last night, how lovely the nurse who did my smear test earlier in the week was, and her having a million things on her mind. There was probably more said and we definitely could of gone on and on, but she had to go, ending the conversation by telling me to stick with ‘Line of Duty’ as it “gets really good”.

One item of clothing you couldn’t live without?

I’ve got a massive wardrobe and I love clothes but this is actually really easy. When I was about 12 my uncle who drove all the equipment round for huge bands gave me a leather biker jacket he’d picked up on someone’s tour. At the time it was HUGE but I wore it all the time, I still do now! I love it and it goes with everything.

One album you couldn’t live with out?

That’s so hard! Like reeeaaally hard but I’m gonna go with P!NK – Missundaztood. I love albums that sound like a full piece, where the art work, name and all the tracks fit together. I listened to that album loads growing up.

What’s your favourite way to spend £10?

A packet of Marlboro fags. That’s really bad isn’t it. If not that then an oat milk latte and a Greggs vegan sausage roll – that’s probably the better option cause I’d still have change!

How about £100?

An evening out with friends, somewhere for dinner and then for a few drinks.

What’s next for you?

I have my headline show at Rye Wax on the 12th June, where I’ll be performing all the tracks from my debut EP ‘Purple’ plus more. I’m putting on lots of events with my label Trash Like You Records. I’ve also just started working on my second EP as well as a longer project that I’ll aim to release towards the end of the year. So lots to look forward to!
