Photographing the black hair movement
Chelsea Nawanga explores her cultural identity in a deeply personal photography series highlighting the versatility of Black hairstyles.
After moving to Luton from Zimbabwe at the age of six, the photographer Chelsea Nawanga found her experience of her hair was rooted in questioning why it was different from that of the white kids at her school, why hers wasn’t straight in the same way. It wasn’t until she reached secondary school that she started embracing the potential of her hair, and now, Nawanga’s work sets out to show that there’s so much more to Black hair than people understand.
