Ella Purnell is no sweetpea
Ella Purnell greets me with a hug. She’s fresh off the set of her HUNGER photoshoot and her eyeliner is still sitting as two black wings above her distinctive doe eyes. “How was the shoot?” I ask. “Red,” she says. “Very on brand for the show.” The show Purnell, 28, is referring to is Sweetpea. It’s her most recent television venture and, as she points out, her most difficult to date. Though the Sky dark comedy drama follows the decidedly complex villain arc of her character, I’m surprised to learn that Purnell found embodying Rhiannon harder than delving into the other gritty roles she is known for. Starring in the post-apocalyptic video-game adaptation Fallout, Purnell was required to do her own stunts (which included being lowered, tied up, into a body of water). Meanwhile, for the survival drama Yellowjackets her character was immersed in the Canadian wilderness amid the bloody and grimy aftermath of a soccer team trip gone seriously wrong.
“It was hard to get into that mental state every day for six months,” Purnell says, seguing back to Rhiannon. “And this was a really difficult thing to relate to because you’re trying to understand, how does a person kill? It’s a fucked-up question and I had to get really comfortable with it. Grappling with this dilemma was no doubt made easier by the fact that Purnell made her debut as an executive producer on the set (excluding the short film Junk Male, which she created with mates last year). “To tell the story of a female Dexter, it’s harder because everyone’s born with a subconscious bias towards women,” Purnell says. “But when I read the script I had such a clear image of her.” It’s evident that Purnell wasn’t just looking for a vanity credit when she decided to take a crack behind the camera for Sweetpea, and it’s this passion that makes her work in front of it equally as artful.
