Charli XCX made a film during brat summer
While all you fools were living your best “brat summer” (aka having one more beer than usual) the woman behind the cultural phenomenon was being, well, not so brat. The director of ERUPCJA, Pete Ohs, told Variety that the singer flew to Warsaw and secretly filmed for the upcoming flick for a couple of weeks. We say secretly, but as her co-star Jeremy O’Harris revealed to Variety, “[Charli] definitely got recognized a bunch of times”. When they filmed a nightclub scene, it was even mistaken for a secret Charli XCX gig.
In ERUPCJA (which takes its name from the Polish for “eruption”), Charli is taking on the role of Bethany, a tourist visiting the country who has something of a tumultuous relationship with a Polish woman. While that might not sound like too crazy of a premise, Ohs’ presence behind the camera will make for an interesting watch — involving a lot of spontaneity and last-minute script changes, it’s actually what drew the “Apple” singer to the project in the first place. When Charli walked into a New York bar back in May (at 3am, no less — very brat), she heard about Ohs’ unique process and immediately signed on.
And though it might come as a surprise given her busy schedule, ERUPCJA isn’t the only on-screen role the singer has in the works. She’s also set to take on a starring role in Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex (alongside Cooper Hoffman and Olivia Wilde), as well as Daniel Goldhaber’s Faces of Death, Julia Jackman’s 100 Nights of Hero, and Benito Skinner’s series Overcompensating. Will it be a successful segue from music to movies, though? It seems likely. According to Ohs, the singer is a “legit actress”.
