Sure, it may have been a couple of weeks since Download Festival – the UK’s largest rock and heavy metal event – ended, but attendees are still likely scraping the mud off their boots following an almost endless downpour. However, that didn’t stop fans from enjoying the likes of Fall Out Boy, Babymetal, and Limp Bizkit, along with a number of other established stars and up-and-comers in the world of rock and metal.

Despite the less-than-favourable conditions, Caitlin Chescoe had her boots on the ground, capturing the fascinating world of the metal subculture scene. Spotlighting everything from their unique fashion to their camaraderie and sense of community, Chescoe’s candid photography perfectly encapsulates their distinctive identities.

“People who are part of this subculture are often labelled as ‘outsiders,’” explains Chescoe. “I have documented how their shared love of music unites different generations, bringing people together in a space where they have the freedom to be themselves.”
